Since environmental crises such as the global Covid 19 pandemic and climate change, we are reconsidering human-centered thoughts that have brought on confrontations between nature and culture, or between a subject and an object and are experiencing a society controlled by fourth industries such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IOT), and virtual reality. Nevertheless, we come up to expectations of lives changing with radical technology—of course a new generation of digital natives emerged—yet we are now subordinated to the machine. The hybrid environment between humans and machines is filled with uncertainty and ambiguity and might be pressuring our present to evolve into another dimensional world. The boundaries between reality and virtuality have been blurred, and even the metaverse, a so-called world beyond reality, has emerged.
The manipulation of memories and reality, has become possible, and virtuality and the metaverse are already becoming realities representing the contemporary era. In the past, surreality and simulacre, which previously had belonged to the category of unreality, represented modern-postmodern reality. In addition, our current reality, ranging from augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), extended reality (XR), and the metaverse, is becoming diverse and even excessive. The next industrial revolution, which had failed to revolutionize human labor and create sustainable jobs, seems to be rearranging social and language/semiotic systems into a mechanical environment. Will our future result in a rosy utopia with virtual surpluses close to the ideal, or a dystopia leading to a catastrophe of shrinking reality?
In the mainstream art world overflowing with high-tech displays and smart AI, the aesthetics of difference has been rapidly industrialized through cultural reproduction and social distribution. In this exhibition, we would like to think about whether what exists now will remain as irreplaceable real or if it can be reproduced as rare virtual reality through artistic practices of the artists/collective. We question realism represented as various virtual worlds in our daily lives and examine the way posthumans relate to human society based on their emotions, labor, and classification and judgment by means of verbal and nonverbal communication in the works of seven artists, including Siha Kim (□), Sungyeon Park (☞), Jehyun Shin (∴), Suji Han (∂), Saeyun Jung (★), and ISVN+Tissue Office (∽).
Siha Kim’s “Hyperspace Cube” is a multilayered cube sculpture that transforms the works of all participating artists into an image-metaverse-object. By creating teleportable parameters to the multiverse, based on the planning of CR Collective and close collaboration with Tissue Office, Kim’s work is the beginning and end of the connection to the multiverse.
