*BEGINNING*
Arthur begged her desperately. He cried, he pouted, he bought her cake and flowers on her birthday and sang a birthday song. All of this himself! Yet nothing he did could sway Julia from her resolution. Over and over, she told him, “I’m not Julia. I’m not Julia, can’t you understand that?”

It was two months after these signs started appearing that Julia slashed her wrists. Arthur and Dan were in the living room, but they were so engrossed in an old movie on TV that they didn’t hear a sound. By the time they found Julia, more than two liters of blood had spilled out on the floor. It had already coagulated, and when Arthur tried to approach her, it stuck to his slippers like uneaten jelly or discarded gum. Arthur collected himself and looked around Julia before finding a photograph. It was a picture of Julia.
Oddly different.

Julia turned 45. Faint wrinkles had begun to set in on her face and forehead, but she had a neat and proper forehead, and resolute-looking pupils and lips. She was like my mirror. Time spent with me felt longer than time spent on my own, and so I treated her simply as I treated myself. But things changed somewhat after a nightmare she had a month ago. More and more, she stood vacantly or stared into the mirror, barking over and over that she wasn’t Julia. I thought it might be Alzheimer’s, so she went for tests at the hospital. People I knew said it might be schizophrenia, so she went for counseling by a psychiatrist. But they could never figure out what was causing it, and the medicine had no effect. She did take a powerful sedative to fall asleep for a spell, and that seemed to help, but that was it. I had no way of knowing where things had gone wrong. We fought sometimes, said spiteful things to one another, but we were just a normal married couple. I was just another middle-aged guy, my belly growing, beginning more and more to ache here and there. The kind of “young at heart” guy who goes back to his younger and gets told off for telling bad jokes whenever he’s out drinking and sits down with pretty young girls. Julia remembers the younger me well, and I’m afraid she will leave me.

I had a nightmare last night. I was walking through a long, mazelike space. Somewhere on the other side, there was a black object coming toward me. My feet couldn’t move. I screamed out for Arthur, but it stuck in my mouth. Bit by little bit, it drew close enough that I could make out a face. I was scared, but I stared straight at it. And oh my God, it was me. That terrifying thing was me.
After I woke up, I looked in the mirror. And then I knew. What was standing there wasn’t me. Really, all of it. I had completely forgotten. How long had she been there, the one riding the swing with me as a girl, the one holding hands with me and playing?

Dad says Mom has been different for the last month, but that’s not true. When I was a child, my mom often said she wasn’t Julia. She said many times that a different version of herself lived over there. Every time she smiled, like she had everything in the world. That smile seemed so happy that I would ask her about the mother in the other world. Mom often said that the world is fake, and that we have to go in search of the real one.
So I said to her, “I guess it’s like a sci fi movie?” With a serious look, she told me it’s not like a movie. Movies invent things that aren’t really real. This is different, she said. You wouldn’t understand it.
I said to her, “Why don’t we just go?” And she said we can’t go. You can’t see them, but it’s like there are cuffs around my feet. And there was sometimes a look of resentment in her eyes. “Julia is already living there,” she said.
