< 모래밭이 검어지고 하얘지고 파래지고 붉어졌다-무대 위의 쌍둥이 1막 > (이하 < 1막 >)은 2016년 < 무대 위의 쌍둥이-프롤로그 >(이하 < 프롤로그 >)의 본편으로 삶을 구성하는 사회의 괴리와 분열, 불합리, 현실과 이상의 간극 속에서 느껴지는 여러 심리적 요소들을 설치와 조형작품으로 제작하고 스토리를 첨부해 연극무대처럼 재구성하여 일종의 무대-시적 풍경을 만드는 작업의 연장선이다. < 프롤로그 > 전시에서 각종 이야기들의 모형 작업으로서 이야기의 시작을 알렸다면, 이번 전시에서는 확고한 믿음과 신념에서 오는 흔들림, 그것에 대한 스스로의 단죄의 방식을 말한다. 단두대와 숲, 화려한 색채의 조명으로 만들어진 비현실적 감각의 무대는 다층적이고 여러 개의 현실로 만들어진 세계에 대해 갖가지의 해석을 낳는다.
김시하는 전시에서 설치와 조형적 작품 외에도 사진, 글쓰기 등 다양한 매체를 활용해왔는데, < 1막 >의 전시 제목인 ‘모래밭이 하얘지고 검어지고 파래지고 붉어졌다’도 이번 전시를 위해 작가가 직접 쓴 짤막한 이야기 ‘믿음2’의 한 대목이다. 이야기의 주인공은 맹목적인 믿음을 위해 자신을 혹사하지만 그저 반복과 순환을 되풀이할 따름이다. 작가는 확고하게 따른 믿음이란 것도 언제나 바로 내 주변에서 일어나는 현실의 다름, 다양한 층위의 한 층으로서만 존재함으로써 의미를 갖는다고 이야기한다.
The Sand Darkened and Whitened, Turned Blue and Red: Twins of Stage, Act 1 (hereafter At 1) is the central part of the 2016 work Twins on Stage: Prologue (hereafter Prologue). It marks a continuation of a process of developing installations and works of design out of psychological elements perceived within social divisions and fissures, unreason, gaps between reality and ideals, and of applying stories to reconfigure them into something akin to a theatrical stage, a kind of stage/poetic landscape. Where the Prologue exhibition signaled the beginning of a story as a model for various kinds of stories, the latest exhibition speaks to the uncertainty that comes from firm belief and conviction, and the way in which one punishes oneself for that. A stage of unreal senses, created through the illumination of a guillotine, a forest, and brilliant color, stirs up various interpretations for a multilayered world made up of several realities.
In addition to installations and works of design, Kim Siha has used various other media in her exhibitions, including photography and writing. The title of the Act I exhibition (The Sand Darkened and Whitened, Turned Blue and Red) comes from Belief 2, a short story written by the artist for this exhibition. The main character in this story drives herself for the sake of blind belief, yet merely follows a cycle of repetition. The artist maintains that even the resulting firm belief holds meaning in its existence, as just one of many layers in the differing reality occurring around us.
